Jungle is based on the use of high speed hip hop breakbeats (160 bpm) combined with half-tempo subsonic dub bass lines. Born in the early 90's as a result of the fusion between breakbeats, House, Hip-Hop, and Reggae. The name of Jungle comes from a experimental underground club in London called "Jungle" where artists like DJ Hype were mixing House music and Hip Hop at 45 rpm. Some of the pioneer Jungle artists are The Scientist, Wax Doctor, Mickey Finn, and Pascal. The antithesis to the bright, flashy schmaltz that some of the other genres exhibit, the black sheep of the electronic family is rough, abrasive, crusty, dirty, and full of swaggering machismo. Even its namesake speaks of raw, primitive militarism, lending fashion and behavior tips to its aficionados. The cleaner variant of Jungle, Drum n Bass, a term invented by the music press before there was a sound to signify it, is very formulaic, clean and smoothed out, and hence trendy to those who like to be junglists but the cut-up sounds of jungle just aren't palatable to them. |
